In the 1960s, Robert A. Monroe (American parapsychologist, 1915-1995) posited the Frequency Following Response theory. This theory states that the human brain responds to the stimuli of continuous light and sound, and eventually starts to swing in the exact pattern of the electric waves of the light and sound frequencies (brainwaves also approximate the same pattern as the frequencies.)　Michael Harner (American anthropologist, 1929-), who is well known for his research in Shamanism, discovered that the drum beat heard at the start of a rituals causes brainwaves to become θ (theta).　This indicates that if a sound like a drum beat is generated at a certain frequency and repeated continuously with a constant rhythm, the frequency of brain waves changes. A similar phenomenon also occurs when light stimulus of a certain frequency reaches the eye.　Modern research regarding sound and light started in the middle of the 1930s with the discovery that brainwaves synchronize with the stimulus of a flashing light. This process is called "coupling." A typical example often cited is that of someone looking at a strobe light with a frequency of 10 Hz, and their brainwaves changing to 10 Hz.　These theories regarding light and sound have lead to revolutionary developments in modern society through the application of micro-electronics. In the 1980s, the first wave in the era of audio-visual systems arrived.
